FAQ

I'm fortunate to be one of the few photographers frequently commissioned for vacations, but that also means I get asked a lot of questions. Here's the most common:

What exactly is Vacation Photography? - It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like although far less awkward. I travel with people and take pictures for them.

Seriously? - Yes.

Who are these people that hire you? - You'd be surprised. It's not individual families but various groups and organizations, like incentive trips and reunions.

Is this what you do full-time? - I'm a full-time photographer, but not everything I do is as fun as shooting vacations. It makes up a little less than half of my job description right now. When I'm not traveling I can be found shooting events, films, and movie posters.

How did you get started? - It wasn't even my idea actually. A friend of mine really liked my photos and asked me to travel to Egypt with her family and friends. She simply wanted me to take pictures of their adventure.

When did you start doing this? - My first commissioned trip was in January of 2010. However I didn't start labeling it "vacation photography" until after I had been on three other trips.

Do you shoot weddings? - No, unless it's part of an adventure. I'm not interested in showing up the day of the wedding and shooting for a few hours. I want to capture the whole story of the trip. I want to capture all the fun that happens before and after the big celebration. I want to capture your friends who traveled just to be present with you. If you're just looking for a wedding photographer then I'm not the guy for you. If you want to remember the whole adventure then let's talk.

When and how do you deliver the pictures? - That's up to you. Some people want their memories on Instagram immediately, others want a printed album when they get back. You tell me what you want, and I'll make it happen.

Scenarios:

I'm going on a trip. What camera or lens would be good for me? - Start by reading my list of suggested gear. Honestly though, if you're going spend a couple thousand dollars on a new camera and lens, why not hire me instead? Or better yet get that camera and bring me along so I can teach you how to use it.

I'm coming to New York City! Can we do a photo shoot? - You bet we can! I'd love to be a part of your adventure. If I can save you from snapping a selfie I'd be happy to do it.

How much time does it take? - None. That's the beautiful thing about it. It's not a photo shoot in the middle of your vacation. We're not adding one more thing to squeeze into your schedule. My job is simply to capture each day as it happens.

We're going scuba diving / rock climbing / snowboarding / hang gliding etc. Are you able to shoot pictures of those things too? - Short answer: I'll do everything I possibly can to make it happen. Long answer: I'm a thrill seeker, I'm athletic, and I would love to learn something new. You can find my adventure resume here.

I'm a hobbyist photographer. Do you do one-on-one instruction? - I'd love to! Maybe your idea of vacation is getting up before sunrise to capture the first light of the day. I'd love to do that with you. Hopefully we can both learn something in the process.

If you have any other questions feel free to hit me up. I'd be happy to tell you what I know.
